Mobile Home Insurance Protects Against Unique Perils

While standard homes with foundations and permanent placements are relatively simple to insure based on many years of standardized practices, the same is not necessarily true with mobile home insurance plans. Mobile homes and their newer counterparts, manufactured homes, have unique risks that must be addressed when looking to insure them properly.

Among those risks is the fact they typically are moved at least once and often times more than once during lifetime of use. That means they run the risk of being damaged or destroyed while in transport. Such structures also do not have permanent foundations and often times are located in parks or other places where there is a higher concentration of people and potential crime or other related perils, such a fire.

The lack of a permanent foundation and relatively thin construction materials make mobile homes and manufactured homes more vulnerable to wind damage as well as damage from weight of ice, snow or sleet. And being located in flat, open park areas make them more likely to be struck by hailstorms, windstorms and tornadoes

The Foremost Insurance Company was the first property and casualty insurer to underwrite mobile home insurance coverage during the 1950s when the family homes began to receive more acceptance among homeowners during the post World War II years. At the time, no property and casualty insurer would underwrite coverage for the structures. But as the housing boom began to take hold across the United States, officials for Foremost recognized a need that since has expanded greatly over the next several decades.

Now, nearly all property and casualty insurers provide mobile home insurance and manufactured home insurance plans for the family homes across the nation. And manufactured homes have improved greatly in their construction methods and materials, making the sturdier and less of a risk for insurers to coverage with their policies.

Mobile home policies generally are the same as coverages underwritten for traditional sticks and bricks homes but can be much lower in cost due to the lower price to repair or replace them. A typical policy provides protection against several named perils, including fire, lightning, explosion, vandalism and many of the others also provided for traditional homes. Actual cash value is the basic level of indemnity offered, but replacement cost coverage also is available at a higher rate by most insurers.

Coverage also can be given for instances when a mobile home or a manufactured home must be moved to a new location due to a covered peril. If the prior location has been damaged to such an extent that the abode must be relocated, that can cost a great deal while also requiring temporary relocation of the occupants. The right policy will cover those costs and ensure the mobile home or manufactured home is relocated properly by a transport company skilled and experienced in the task.

When looking for mobile home or manufactured home insurance plans, there are a great number of property and casualty insurance companies from which to choose. Shopping for the best deal is a wise move and can result in a level of protection that rivals that of traditional family homes.
